Nécrologie de Wouter Hobé
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wouter Hobé, on Sunday October 12, 2025, at the age of 92.
Son of the late Roelof Jan Hobé and the late Johanna Hobé (née Dalhuysen).
Beloved husband and best friend of over 64 years to Marie Corneli Hobé (née Dorsman).
Loving father of Johanna Marie Hobé (John Sauvé), Christopher Laurence Hobé (Kerri Lee Hobé) and Wouter Anthony Hobé (Laurie Ann Hellstrom).
Proud grandfather of Corey Anthony Hobé (Alyssa Bailey), Aaron Christopher Hobé (Melissa Abate), Marissa Lauren Hobé (Nathan Monte-Bradbury), Talia Jamie Hobé (Max Vivar-Maas) and Emma Alison Hobé (Lorenzo Baliello).
Wouter will be fondly remembered by his extended family and by those he touched throughout his incredible life:
Born to Dutch settlers in a new land, Indonesia. Everything was wonderful until WW2 broke out. First, they thought they had escaped the horrors of Europe; but when the Japanese invaded, life changed very quickly for young Walter. His father taken a year before and put into a POW camp, followed by his Mom and the 2 boys. Walter, at the age of 9, was able to stay with his Mom; but, as soon as he turned 10, he was separated to a boys camp. Slave labour and starvation were daily problems. He barely made it through the 3.5 years to the day the atom bomb fell.
He was reunited with his family just before boarding a ship to Australia and stayed there to heal and gain weight for a year. Then he returned to Holland by ship. Having to catch up on the school years he missed. Later doing his military service and getting meningitis, and rehab for a year in a sanatorium.
Working for KLM, then immigrating to the promised land of Canada! Back to Holland to marry Marie, the love of his life, and bring her home. Three children and 5 grandchildren of whom he was very proud! Working for Canadian Pacific Airlines which became Canadian and then finally retiring with Air Canada. Moving to the country becoming a gentleman farmer with his long-time wife Marie, having sheep and donkeys living the good life! Travelling the world. Family and church were very important to Walter. Retired to Alexandria where he found many friends in bible study and a writing group, where he wrote his life story. He will be greatly missed!
We are very grateful to Glengarry Memorial hospital for their loving care of Papa (Opa) taking him into their hearts with love.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Alexandria United Church (Church on the Hill), 36 Kincardine St E, Alexandria, Ontario, K0C 1A0, (613) 525-2651 on Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 2 p.m. Funeral Livestream: https://youtube.com/live/P0zRyELi5A8?feature=share
